Beach House - Tyrella

The commission was to design a new two storey holiday home, to replace an existing dwelling, on the beach at Tyrella. The brief was for a lounge, a sun-room (overlooking the sea), a kitchen and utility room and five bedrooms.

Design
The site is unusual as it is accessed directly from the beach. However there is a possibility that access may be provided from the opposite side in the future. This meant that orientation was a consideration but, as the client required a sun room overlooking the sea, locating the main entrance on the side is a logical compromise. The main door is therefore on the gable elevation and is set in an open porch to provide a shelter. The roof pitch drops to single storey level on the landward side.

On the other side the pitch extends into the hip roof over the sunroom which allows the inclusion of two gable dormers rising from the main wall.
Internally the hallway is angled and borrows additional natural light, from the sun room. This via a large internal sunrise pattern window above the stair half landing which also gives light to the first floor landing. Steps drop the level down under the staircase to access the sunroom. This features a vaulted hip ceiling with half king post trusses. Double doors access the beach garden, under a small dormer roof, and double doors return to the main lounge. The kitchen features a vaulted ceiling and is lit by two velux roof lights. There are two bedrooms and a shower room on this floor with further three bedrooms and the main bathroom on the first floor.
